It involved entering a trance-like state to communicate with gods, spirits, and ancestors using herbs, chants, and other rituals. Despite being widely practiced in the Viking Age, the spread of Christianity led to its decline. Nonetheless, it remains an important part of Norse mythology and has influenced modern pagan and witchcraft communities.
