When wasps lay their eggs on the leaves or branches of Oak trees, the larvae secrete a chemical, causing a spherical growth. Certain varieties of Oak Gall were once used to form inks for writing. It is said that adding Oak Gall can increase the potency of any herbal blend or spell. Perfect for use as an altarpiece, carried in a mojo bag, or to create your ink for name papers.
Oak apples are galls formed on oak trees by the larva of a type of wasp. In folk Magic, they are used to divine whether or not a child has been bewitched or struck by the Evil Eye. To determine bewitchment, three oak apples are cut from a tree and dropped into a bowl or pail of water that is placed beneath the child’s cradle. If they float, the child is safe; if they sink, they are bewitched. The procedure requires strict silence, or it will not be accurate.

| Today is Oak Apple Day. Here is a medieval ink you can make from oak apples that will add power to your spells or book of shadows. An oak apple is also known as an oak gall, a small round growth that appears on oak branches. Crush several oak galls and boil them for about 5 minutes, in just enough water to cover them. While they cool, cover 13 rusty iron nails in a dish of vinegar for several hours. When cool, pour the oak gall water through cheesecloth or a coffee filter, and combine the water with the rusty nail vinegar. You may add some ash to darken it if needed and gum arabic as a binder; store in an airtight container.
