Actually unrelated to the Santalum (Sandalwood) family, Pterocarpus santalinus (Red Sandalwood) is a tree native to Southern India. Different from white sandalwood (Santalum album), red sandalwood lacks the intense aromatic properties of it's step-brother. Despite this, the two different plants possess similar healing and medicinal properties. For example, both are used to treat disorders of the skin, and used to increase fluid retention. The red sandalwood tree takes much longer to grow and become hardwood, making it's supply much more limited than that of it's cultural counterpart.
